On June 1, 2026, Vietnam marked a significant milestone by granting amnesty to 9,950 inmates.
Signed by President To Lam, this initiative follows the successful 14th National Party Congress and recent national elections.
Among those released are 63 foreign nationals and 133 individuals convicted of corruption-related crimes, though those convicted of terrorism or anti-government activities remain ineligible.
Vietnamese authorities describe the program as a reflection of the state's commitment to humanitarian values, offering inmates a chance for social reintegration.
This is not an isolated event; since 2009, Vietnam has conducted 12 rounds of amnesty, releasing over 118,000 people.
By focusing on rehabilitation, Vietnam seeks to balance the rule of law with practical social support, helping former prisoners transition successfully back into the workforce and their communities.
