Texas hosts workshop on improved water management
As Texas experiences rapid growth, the state is addressing its urgent water challenges through a modern approach known as Forecast-Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO).
In April 2026, the Third Joint Workshop on Texas FIRO brought together experts from the Texas Water Development Board, the University of Texas at Arlington, and NOAA.
With the population expected to reach 51.5 million by 2070 and water supplies projected to shrink, Texas is shifting its focus from building new reservoirs to maximizing efficiency.
A key strategy is the "One Water" approach, which treats all sources—including stormwater and recycled wastewater—as a single, renewable resource.
By combining advanced meteorological data with community-led conservation, Texas aims to secure a sustainable future for the industries and families driving its economy.
This transition is not just about technology; it is an economic and environmental imperative to ensure that the Lone Star State remains resilient against droughts, climate shifts, and rising industrial demand.
