The U.S. government has announced a significant $50 million pledge to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to combat the growing outbreak of the Bundibugyo ebolavirus.
This rare strain of Ebola, currently spreading through parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, has already caused hundreds of cases and over 100 deaths.
A major challenge in this crisis is the lack of licensed vaccines or antiviral treatments specifically for the Bundibugyo strain.
The new funding will prioritize the rapid development, testing, and manufacturing of at least two vaccine candidates, aiming for emergency authorization as quickly as possible.
With cases rising, the international community faces urgent pressure to accelerate scientific progress and deliver life-saving medical countermeasures to the affected regions.
