The Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) has recently become a global health priority due to an unprecedented outbreak in 2026.

Classified as a species of the Ebolavirus genus, this pathogen typically originates in wildlife, with fruit bats serving as the likely reservoir.

Transmission to humans occurs through contact with infected bushmeat or through direct exposure to the bodily fluids of infected individuals.

While historically associated with a lower fatality rate than the more infamous Zaire ebolavirus, the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has resulted in over 2,100 cases.
