Ukraine Appeals FIA Decision to Lift Bans on Russian and Belarusian Competitors

In a controversial move, the FIA World Motor Sport Council decided on August 3, 2026, to lift emergency restrictions on Russian and Belarusian competitors that had been in effect since March 2022.
Drivers, teams, and officials from these nations are now permitted to compete internationally without signing neutrality declarations, and they may once again display national flags and play national anthems.
While the FIA continues to ban races within Russia and Belarus, the policy shift marks a significant departure from previous sanctions.
The Automobile Federation of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Ministry of Youth and Sports have formally appealed this decision.
Ukraine argues that the move serves as a form of 'sportswashing,' potentially legitimizing ongoing aggression.
While the FIA claims it is aligning with broader trends from the International Olympic Committee, the debate highlights a lack of consensus on the role of sports during times of war.
