The upcoming anime series Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia is generating buzz for an unexpected casting choice.
Professional Mongolian sumo wrestlers Tamawashi and Tamashoho, both from the Kataonami stable, have landed their first voice acting roles in the series.
Tamawashi, a top-tier wrestler, will voice the legendary Genghis Khan, while Tamashoho takes on the role of a resilient Mongol soldier.
Both will also provide additional voice work throughout the production.
The wrestlers described the recording process as both challenging and exciting, with Tamashoho noting his genuine love for anime.
Produced by the acclaimed Studio Science SARU, the series is directed by Abel Góngora with Naoko Yamada serving as executive director.
The show is based on the manga by Tomato Soup and tells the gripping 13th-century tale of Sitara, a young girl seeking survival and revenge after the Mongol conquests.
Fans can look forward to the premiere on July 4, 2026, which begins with a one-hour special.
Before the broadcast, an advance screening will take place at Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles on July 3, and the series has already been selected for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
