Trinidad and Tobago is taking a major leap in its digital transformation by becoming the first Caribbean nation to adopt India’s world-renowned Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
Signed in September 2024, the agreement between the Caribbean nation’s Ministry of Digital Transformation and the National Payments Corporation of India’s International Payments Ltd aims to revolutionize the local financial ecosystem.
The initiative focuses on creating a secure, transparent, and efficient digital payment environment to reduce reliance on cash and lower transaction costs for residents.
Crucially, the government of Trinidad and Tobago will maintain full ownership and control of the platform, ensuring it can be tailored to meet local needs while building domestic expertise through collaboration with India.
Beyond UPI, this partnership expands into the broader 'India Stack' ecosystem, which includes secure digital document storage through DigiLocker and streamlined public procurement via the Government e-Marketplace.
By fostering greater financial inclusion and operational efficiency, Trinidad and Tobago is positioning itself as a modern leader in the Caribbean’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
