In a landmark moment for hip-hop history, the trial for the 1996 murder of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur finally began in Las Vegas in August 2026.
The case centers on Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a 63-year-old former gang leader.
Although prosecutors do not claim Davis was the actual shooter, they allege he acted as the “on-site commander” of the drive-by shooting that claimed Shakur’s life.
The crime originated from a violent gang rivalry between the Mob Piru and the South Side Compton Crips, following a confrontation at the MGM Grand.
These public admissions became critical evidence, as a judge ruled them admissible in court.
While Davis has pleaded not guilty and his defense team claims he often exaggerated his status for fame, prosecutors are building their case on witness testimony and gang history.
As the only living person charged in connection to the tragedy, Davis faces the possibility of life imprisonment in a trial that promises to shed light on one of music’s most enduring mysteries.
