SpaceX's Cargo Dragon spacecraft plays a vital role in maintaining operations at the International Space Station (ISS).
Unlike other resupply vehicles that burn up upon re-entry, the Dragon is the only U.S. cargo ship capable of returning heavy equipment and scientific experiments back to Earth.
This capability is crucial for researchers who need to conduct detailed laboratory analyses on samples, such as bioprinted tissues and stem cells, that were processed in microgravity.
After undocking from the ISS, the capsule performs a deorbit burn to re-enter Earth's atmosphere, protected by a specialized heat shield.
It then deploys parachutes to ensure a safe splashdown in the ocean.
Once recovered by SpaceX teams, time-sensitive biological samples are quickly delivered to scientists, often within 48 hours.
Through NASA's Commercial Resupply Services, these missions occur regularly, supporting sustainable space travel by reusing both Falcon 9 boosters and the Dragon capsules themselves.
