Samsung Releases New Video Standard for Mobile Filmmakers
Samsung Electronics has launched the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec, a breakthrough for mobile filmmakers.
Developed to bridge the gap between casual recording and cinema-grade production, APV allows creators to capture footage that stays pristine through complex editing.
It is visually lossless, maintaining high detail through multiple rounds of editing while remaining 10% more storage-efficient than other professional codecs.
Designed for real-time processing, it handles 8K video without overheating mobile hardware.
Samsung released APV as an open-source project, "OpenAPV," and established it as a global standard, RFC 9924, through the IETF.
Debuting on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, the codec works alongside Samsung Log, enabling filmmakers to record "flat" images perfect for professional color grading.
By solving the issue of image degradation inherent in typical video formats, APV transforms smartphones into serious cinematography tools, ensuring that quality never breaks down during post-production.
