Russia Intensifies Attacks on Kyiv with Advanced Drones

As of late September 2026, Russia has significantly intensified its aerial bombardment of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
The conflict has shifted to a strategy characterized by nearly round-the-clock attacks and the large-scale deployment of new, jet-powered drones.
These models, known as Geran-3, Geran-4, and Geran-5, travel at speeds up to 600 km/h—much faster than older versions—and fly at higher altitudes, making them difficult for traditional air defense systems to intercept.
In September alone, Russia launched over 3,000 of these drones.
Analysts believe this 'punishment campaign' aims to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses and deplete critical interceptor stockpiles before winter, targeting energy grids and civilian infrastructure.
This escalation has turned the war into a 'technological race.'
While Ukraine is working to develop faster interceptor drones to counter these threats, the technology is still in its early stages, leaving a dangerous gap in protection.
Russia claims these strikes are retaliatory, signaling that the bombardment is part of a broader struggle as peace negotiations remain stagnant.
