Wildfires are becoming more frequent and destructive, but a new competition is using technology to fight back.
The XPRIZE Wildfire, an $11 million global challenge launched in 2023, aims to change how we manage forest fires.
Instead of waiting for fires to become massive, this competition focuses on ultra-early detection and rapid, autonomous response.
The competition is split into two tracks: Track A uses satellites and AI to monitor vast areas from space, while Track B tasks teams with deploying drones and ground sensors to find and extinguish fires automatically.
Crucially, the goal is not to stop all fire, as fire is often healthy for nature, but to stop catastrophic events.
By using robotics and smart data, we can prevent small sparks from becoming uncontrollable disasters, saving lives, ecosystems, and billions of dollars in the process.
