NASAβs Perseverance rover has offered an incredible window into the early, violent history of Mars.
By examining the 'Broom Point member,' a 245-foot-thick stack of ancient rock on the rim of Jezero Crater, researchers have uncovered evidence of a chaotic past.
These rocks, dating back over 3.9 billion years, tell a story of frequent asteroid impacts that once pummeled the Martian surface.
Unlike Earth, where plate tectonics constantly recycle the crust, Mars preserves this ancient record, acting as a 'cosmic weather report' for the early solar system.
Scientists identified specific rock types, including breccias and glassy beads, which prove these layers were forged by high-energy collisions rather than volcanic activity.
The site also reveals the 'one-two punch' of the massive Isidis Basin and Jezero Crater impacts, which tilted and fractured the landscape.
Perseverance has collected core samples, 'Bell Island' and 'Main River,' which are destined for Earth.
