Obamas' Production Company Higher Ground Goes Independent
Founded in 2018 by Barack and Michelle Obama, the production company Higher Ground is embarking on a new chapter.
By late 2026, the firm will transition to a fully independent business model, concluding its long-standing first-look agreement with Netflix.
This strategic move is designed to grant Higher Ground greater creative freedom, allowing the team to collaborate with a diverse array of studios and streaming services rather than being limited to one partner.
Over the past eight years, the company successfully produced over 20 projects for Netflix, including the Academy Award-winning documentary American Factory and the hit thriller Leave the World Behind.
While the Netflix partnership ends soon, Higher Ground remains busy; it is currently producing a new sketch comedy for HBO and continuing work on several projects already in development for Netflix.
As the media landscape shifts, industry analysts note that many established production labels are moving toward this independent model to maximize their distribution opportunities.
With a focus on telling stories that inform and inspire, the Obamas’ venture is poised to continue amplifying diverse voices across the entire entertainment industry, unburdened by exclusive streaming contracts.
