New York is setting a new standard in the tech world with the passage of the Responsible AI Safety and Education (RAISE) Act.
Signed into law, this legislation introduces a rigorous oversight framework for 'frontier' AI models.
Starting January 1, 2027, large developers—those generating over $500 million in annual revenue—operating within New York must adhere to strict new safety protocols.
To ensure compliance, the state has established an oversight office within the Department of Financial Services.
Non-compliance carries heavy consequences, with penalties reaching up to $1 million for a first violation and $3 million for subsequent ones.
While some critics argue this creates a fragmented landscape compared to potential federal standards, New York remains committed to protecting citizens from 'critical harm.'
Along with other recent measures, such as rules regarding AI-generated performers, the RAISE Act marks a major milestone in New York’s efforts to balance rapid technological innovation with public safety and corporate accountability.
