New semiconductor manufacturing facility opens in Vermont

Vermont is rapidly becoming a key player in the semiconductor industry with the official opening of the V-GaN Test and Characterization Lab in South Burlington.

Launched in July 2026 at the OnLogic headquarters, this facility plays a crucial role in the Vermont Gallium Nitride (V-GaN) Tech Hub.

Rather than manufacturing chips, the lab provides essential high-power testing and validation services, helping researchers bridge the gap between laboratory prototypes and commercial production for next-generation GaN semiconductors.

The broader regional effort is bolstered by a massive $16 billion investment by GlobalFoundries in its Essex Junction plant.

Supported by the federal CHIPS and Science Act, this initiative focuses on advanced technologies like silicon photonics and GaN, which are vital for electric vehicles and 5G communications.

With a commitment to training over 500 new workers and extensive K-12 STEM outreach, Vermont is effectively positioning itself as a hub for efficient, high-performance semiconductor technology through a powerful blend of academic, private, and government partnerships.
