New MRI scanners installed to improve patient access in Newfoundland
For years, patients in Newfoundland and Labrador have struggled with long wait times for MRI scans, sometimes waiting over a year for a diagnostic appointment.
To address this, the provincial government and NL Health Services have launched a major initiative to modernize healthcare infrastructure.
As of April 2026, the province has been expanding its capacity by installing new MRI scanners, including a significant addition at the Ambulatory Health Hub in St.
John’s.
However, experts warn that new technology is only part of the solution.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) emphasizes that staffing is the real challenge.
Moving forward, the success of this initiative depends on a balanced approach: investing in both physical infrastructure and a robust strategy for recruiting and retaining the essential medical staff needed to run the systems effectively.
