In mid-September 2026, a significant security incident occurred in Lithuania that tested NATO's regional readiness.
After flying over the country for 30 minutes, it was intercepted and destroyed by Italian fighter jets participating in NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission.
The drone crashed near the village of Pratkunai, alarmingly close to the critical Kruonis Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant.
Upon inspection, Lithuanian authorities discovered an explosive device on the wreckage, later identified by President Gitanas Nausėda as a 'Gerbera-type' drone.
Despite the security breach, officials believe the incident was likely an accident.
Experts suggest the drone was intended for a target in Ukraine but was diverted off course by electronic warfare systems.
While no direct attack from Belarus was confirmed, the event remains historic as the first time a NATO member shot down an intruding drone over its own soil.
This occurrence highlights the ongoing regional tensions near the Baltic states and the essential role of NATO’s collective defense in maintaining security amid the backdrop of the conflict in Ukraine.
