In a remarkable breakthrough, NASA has unveiled a new window into our cosmic history.
By combining the unique strengths of the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes, astronomers have successfully observed 27 tiny, ancient objects known as Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs).
These distant, icy bodies orbit far beyond Neptune and act as literal time capsules, preserving conditions from 4.5 billion years ago.
Surprisingly, the study revealed fewer of these small objects than scientists had predicted, suggesting that our current theories on planet formation may need refining.
By comparing 'cold' TNOs, which have remained undisturbed since the solar system's birth, with 'hot' TNOs, which were pushed outward by giant planets, researchers are piecing together the mysterious era when dust and pebbles first began to coalesce into the planets we know today.
This discovery not only showcases the incredible synergy between our most advanced observatories but also brings us closer to understanding the fundamental building blocks of our home in space.
