Canada Boosts Domestic Ammunition Production for National Defense
In March 2026, the Canadian government announced a significant $1.4 billion investment aimed at expanding domestic ammunition production.
This initiative, carried out through the Canadian Defence Industry Resilience (CDIR) Program, is a strategic move to boost national sovereignty and ensure a reliable supply chain.
By reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical munitions, specifically 155mm artillery ammunition, Canada is strengthening its operational readiness and fulfilling its commitments as a reliable NATO partner.
Key recipients of this funding include IMT Precision in Ontario, which will produce empty metal shells, and General Dynamics in Quebec, which is set to build facilities for essential components like nitrocellulose and the assembly of 155mm projectiles.
By localizing the manufacturing of vital supplies, Canada is not only addressing global market vulnerabilities but also securing its position as a self-sufficient actor in national and international defense.
