Major leagues demand FIFA governance reforms

In September 2026, four of Europe’s most powerful football leagues—the English Premier League, Germany’s Bundesliga, Spain’s La Liga, and Italy’s Serie A—took a bold step by demanding significant reforms to FIFA’s governance.
This unified front emerged due to growing frustration with leadership practices under FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
A major catalyst for this movement was the controversial 'FIFA Forward Enterprise' plan, which sought to sell a large stake in FIFA's commercial rights to private investors, raising fears that profit was being prioritized over the sport's core integrity.
Beyond commercial concerns, the leagues criticized FIFA’s 'relentless expansionism' regarding the international match calendar, arguing it places an unsustainable burden on players.
By calling for an independently chaired Governance Convention, these leagues hope to replace systemic power imbalances with transparent, sustainable, and fair leadership for the future of football.
