Iceland to Vote on European Union Membership

On 29 August 2026, Iceland will hold a national referendum to decide whether to resume negotiations for European Union membership.
This vote follows the 2024 parliamentary elections, where a coalition led by the pro-EU Social Democratic Alliance took power, reigniting a debate that had been dormant for over a decade.
Iceland previously applied for membership in 2009 during the aftermath of a severe financial crisis, but the process was halted by 2015 due to domestic concerns regarding national sovereignty, particularly over the vital fishing industry.
While Iceland is already integrated with Europe through the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area, it currently has no voting power in Brussels.
Supporters of the upcoming referendum argue that membership would grant Iceland a seat at the table and greater economic stability.
It is important to note that this referendum is not a final vote on joining the EU, but rather a decision on whether to restart formal accession talks.
If voters approve, negotiations would begin, with any final agreement requiring another public vote.
