In September 2026, global leaders gathered at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York to tackle the ongoing Ebola outbreak, specifically caused by the Bundibugyo virus.
With the WHO declaring the situation a public health emergency, officials from the G20 and health organizations focused on a critical shift: moving diagnostic capabilities from centralized labs to the frontline.
A major highlight was the WHO's July 2026 Emergency Use Listing for the first molecular test for the Bundibugyo virus.
Innovation is currently focused on portable, point-of-care tools, such as duplex platforms capable of distinguishing between Ebola and Lassa viruses, and integrating sample preparation with PCR technology for faster results in the field.
Supported by multi-million euro emergency funding, this global initiative aims to move beyond reactive crisis management.
