Global awareness campaign marks World Hepatitis Day

Every year on July 28, the world observes World Hepatitis Day to raise awareness about viral hepatitis, a condition often referred to as a "silent killer."

Baruch Blumberg, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who discovered the hepatitis B virus and developed its vaccine.

Viral hepatitis causes inflammation of the liver and comes in five main types: A, B, C, D, and E.

Despite it being a preventable and often treatable disease, it remains a massive public health challenge, claiming approximately 1.3 million lives annually.

The primary goal of the global campaign is to support the World Health Organization’s mission to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

The campaign emphasizes that we already have the necessary tools—effective vaccines and curative treatments—to stop the virus.

Success requires collective action: governments must increase investment, while individuals are encouraged to prioritize testing and vaccination.

By breaking down the barriers of stigma and improving access to care, the global community can turn the tide and protect millions of lives.
