Recently, Northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland have become the stage for Cold Response 2026.
This massive training event involves 25,000 troops from 14 NATO nations, testing the Alliance’s ability to defend its northern flank.
Unlike previous drills, this exercise is part of the Arctic Sentry initiative, highlighting a permanent shift toward a stronger NATO presence in the High North.
While the Arctic remains a top strategic priority, global tensions—specifically in the Middle East—have forced countries like the U.S., Italy, and France to reallocate some military assets.
Furthermore, Russia’s Northern Fleet has issued live-firing warnings in the Barents Sea, a clear signal of the regional friction.
Despite these challenges, the presence of high-level officials, such as the Canadian Prime Minister and German Chancellor, underscores the importance of the Total Defence concept.
By integrating forces across these rugged environments, NATO is proving its logistical capacity to maintain a cohesive front in one of the world's most demanding terrains.
