France detects disinformation campaign targeting upcoming presidential elections

As France approaches the 2027 presidential election, security authorities have uncovered a sophisticated disinformation campaign orchestrated by the Russian-linked propaganda network, Storm-1516.

This campaign specifically targets prominent political figures, such as Raphaël Glucksmann and Édouard Philippe, using AI-generated deepfakes and fraudulent news websites to spread fabricated scandals.

Unlike the 2017 #MacronLeaks, which relied on mass data breaches, today's tactics focus on creating highly realistic, personalized misinformation designed to erode public trust in democratic institutions.

In response to these evolving threats, France has significantly bolstered its defensive posture.

The government established Viginum, an interagency unit dedicated to monitoring foreign information manipulation, and implemented a legislative framework that allows for the rapid removal of false content during the pre-election period.

However, with heightened vigilance and robust institutional safeguards, France is better prepared to protect the integrity of its upcoming electoral process against foreign interference.
