European Leagues Demand Major FIFA Reforms

In a historic move, Europe’s four major football leagues—the English Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A, and Germany’s Bundesliga—have united to demand fundamental governance reforms at FIFA.
This escalation follows the controversial 'FIFA Forward Enterprise' project, which aimed to sell commercial stakes in major tournaments to private investors, a move the leagues labeled an abuse of power.
The leagues argue that FIFA suffers from systemic issues, including a dangerous concentration of power within the presidency and a lack of effective checks and balances.
The leagues have presented three pillars for reform ahead of the March 2027 presidential election: formal stakeholder participation in decision-making, mandatory public impact assessments for new proposals, and a strict separation between FIFA’s regulatory functions and its commercial competition activities.
While critical of President Gianni Infantino, the leagues emphasize that the problem is institutional rather than personal.
With the presidential nomination deadline approaching in November 2026, the world of football watches to see if these influential organizations can force a shift toward a more transparent and accountable FIFA.
