Renowned anime director Tsutomu Shibayama passes away at 84
The animation world is mourning the loss of legendary director Tsutomu Shibayama, who passed away on March 6, 2026, at the age of 84.
Born in Tokyo, Shibayama was a pillar of the Japanese animation industry.
He began his career in 1963 at Toei Animation, working alongside peers like Hayao Miyazaki before co-founding Ajia-do Animation Works in 1978.
Shibayama is perhaps best remembered for his monumental contribution to the Doraemon franchise.
Beyond Doraemon, his influence spanned across iconic shows like Chibi Maruko-chan, Nintama Rantaro, and Ranma ½.
He even contributed to international projects, including Disney’s DuckTales.
His immense talent was recognized with multiple honors, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs.
