In May 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) faced a new health crisis as an Ebola outbreak was confirmed in Ituri Province.
The World Health Organization officially declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern shortly after.
The virus has spread rapidly, moving from Ituri into North and South Kivu, and has even reached cross-border areas in Uganda.
Experts report that thousands of people in overcrowded displacement camps are at high risk, while regional conflict and the presence of armed groups severely hinder humanitarian aid efforts.
With over 120 armed groups operating in the area, medical workers face significant dangers, and infrastructure remains fragile.
However, without a vaccine, containment relies entirely on traditional methods like contact tracing and isolation.
This 17th recorded Ebola outbreak in the DRC highlights the extreme vulnerability of the region, where health systems are already struggling with severe underfunding and overlapping health crises.
