The 2026 Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has officially become the second-largest in recorded history.
Surpassing the scale of the 2018โ2020 Kivu epidemic, this crisis is moving at an unprecedented speed, trailing only the massive 2014โ2016 West Africa outbreak.
The situation is particularly concerning due to the pathogen involved: the Bundibugyo virus.
Unlike the more common Zaire ebolavirus, there are currently no approved vaccines or targeted treatments for this specific strain, leaving health workers without their most vital tools.
Humanitarian efforts are further hampered by significant geopolitical instability, ongoing armed conflict, and poor local infrastructure in the Ituri Province epicenter.
As the virus spreads across multiple provinces, international health organizations warn that current containment capacity is insufficient.
The rapid acceleration of this epidemic highlights an urgent need for increased international support to prevent further loss of life in a region already stretched to its breaking point.
