The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is currently facing its most severe Ebola crisis to date.
Officially declared on May 15, 2026, this 17th outbreak has become the fastest-growing in recorded history.
As of early August, officials have confirmed over 3,442 cases and a death toll exceeding 1,500.
This emergency is particularly dangerous because it is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or specific medical treatments.
The outbreak is concentrated in eastern DRC, with Ituri serving as the primary epicenter.
Furthermore, the situation is exacerbated by a regional food security crisis.
With contact tracing rates currently below the necessary threshold for containment, the DRC is fighting an uphill battle.
