Delhi High Court Denies Telegram's Plea in NEET-UG Exam Security Case

On June 19, 2026, the Delhi High Court delivered a landmark ruling regarding digital security and academic integrity.
The court dismissed a plea from Telegram, which had challenged the Indian government's temporary nationwide block of the messaging app.
This government directive was specifically implemented to protect the integrity of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, held on June 21.
Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology argued that Telegram's features—such as large channels and message editing—were being exploited by syndicates to circulate exam leaks and misinformation.
While Telegram argued that a platform-wide ban was a draconian and disproportionate measure affecting millions, the court disagreed.
The court determined that in light of the emergency nature of the situation, affecting over 2 million students, the temporary restriction was a necessary and proportional step to ensure a fair exam.
This decision highlights the ongoing tension between maintaining public order and protecting digital rights in India, setting a significant precedent for how tech platforms are regulated during critical national events.
