New Initiative Launched to Reduce Maternal Mortality in Africa
In March 2026, a new coalition including the WHO and UNICEF launched an ambitious initiative to tackle the persistent maternal health crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa.
To achieve these goals, the initiative is deploying mobile clinics to reach remote villages, training thousands of community health workers, and providing rural facilities with emergency equipment.
This effort aligns with the African Union's 2026โ2028 roadmap and seeks to accelerate progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goal of reducing maternal deaths.
By building on successful models like that of Tanzania, which significantly lowered its mortality rates through improved emergency networks, organizers hope to transform the landscape of maternal health.
