Additionally, melting ice reduces Earth’s reflectivity, or albedo, causing surfaces to absorb more solar energy.
These environmental shifts have severe consequences for water security.
Precipitation patterns are becoming erratic, with wet regions facing more flooding and dry areas suffering longer, more intense droughts.
The reliability of water for farming and energy is also declining as rain replaces snow.
Furthermore, water quality is suffering due to rising temperatures and contamination from floods, which heightens the risk of disease.
Currently, two billion people lack safe drinking water, and terrestrial storage—such as soil moisture and ice—is dropping by 1 cm annually.
As sea levels rise, saltwater intrusion threatens our freshwater aquifers, making the global water crisis a matter of survival, especially for the world's most vulnerable populations.
