Charlotte is preparing for a leadership transition following Mayor Vi Lyles's surprise announcement that she will step down on June 30, 2026, to focus on family.
To fill the vacancy until December 2027, the City Council has launched a unique appointment process rather than holding a special election.
After vetting over 110 applicants, the council narrowed the field to five finalists: Harold Cogdell, Carrie Cook, Robert Harrington, James Mitchell, and Caleb Theodros.
These candidates were selected for a formal interview round on June 18.
The process has sparked debate regarding transparency, particularly concerning the participation of Mayor Pro Tem James Mitchell, who is both a council member and a candidate.
The council is set to make the final appointment on June 22, with the new mayor expected to be sworn in on July 1, 2026.
This transition represents a significant moment for Charlotte as it seeks continuity during an unexpected leadership change.
