Celebrating World Snake Day and animal appreciation

Every year on July 16th, the world marks World Snake Day, a special occasion dedicated to changing how we perceive these often-misunderstood creatures.

While snakes frequently face negative stereotypes in movies and folklore, they are actually vital members of our global ecosystems.

From the lush rainforests to your local garden, snakes play a crucial role as natural pest controllers, managing rodent and insect populations that could otherwise damage crops or spread diseases.

With over 3,500 species found on every continent except Antarctica, snakes show incredible biodiversity.

Their biology is equally fascinating; they smell with their forked tongues, see through protective transparent scales instead of eyelids, and have highly flexible jaws that allow them to eat large meals.

Importantly, while some snakes are venomous, the vast majority are shy and prefer to avoid humans entirely.

By moving past fear and choosing education, we can promote safer coexistence and better conservation.

You can help by avoiding content that promotes animal cruelty and by simply giving snakes their space when you encounter them in the wild.
