On April 29, 2026, Canada announced a bold plan to become a global nuclear energy superpower.
Minister of Energy Tim Hodgson revealed a new National Nuclear Energy Strategy, which will be officially released later this year.
The government aims to position Canada at the forefront of the nuclear industry, capitalizing on its status as a major uranium producer and its existing nuclear expertise.
The new strategy focuses on four key areas: building new nuclear projects, exporting Canadian technology, expanding fuel production, and fostering innovation in fission and fusion.
To support these goals, the government has announced significant funding.
This includes $40 million for microreactor feasibility studies to power remote regions and a massive $2.2 billion investment to modernize the historic Chalk River Laboratories over the next decade.
Currently, nuclear energy provides 13% of Canada's electricity, contributing $22 billion to the economy annually.
By embracing this strategy, Canada intends to secure its energy sovereignty and capture a larger share of the rapidly growing global nuclear market, which is expected to expand by $200 billion annually by 2030.
This initiative represents a collaborative effort toward a more sustainable and secure energy future.
