In July 2026, Microsoft announced a major restructuring of its gaming division, resulting in thousands of layoffs.
The cuts hit Bethesda Game Studios and ZeniMax Online hard, impacting teams behind iconic franchises like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls.
In response, the One Bethesda Game Studio (OneBGS) union, backed by the Communications Workers of America, launched a series of protests dubbed 'Save Our Devs.'
Developers held rallies across North America and used symbols like 'Scabby the Rat' to voice their opposition during executive visits.
Tensions escalated after the company dismantled internal memorials for affected staff, further damaging morale.
Beyond the emotional impact, the union alleges that Microsoft failed to bargain in good faith and ignored proposals for managing staff reductions submitted months prior.
While morale remains low, the union is now pursuing legal action through the NLRB and has authorized a potential strike if negotiations regarding severance and job protections do not improve.
