In a move to address a significant £500 million budget deficit, the BBC has announced major reductions to its sports programming.
Starting in late September 2026, the broadcaster will cut lunchtime and overnight sports bulletins on its dedicated news channel.
These changes will result in the loss of 36 positions within BBC Sport, with the corporation resorting to compulsory redundancies after voluntary applications proved insufficient.
Senior BBC leadership attributes these cuts to changing audience habits, noting that sports fans now prefer accessing breaking updates and highlights via social media rather than waiting for scheduled broadcasts.
Consequently, the BBC is shifting its focus toward digital and online content, particularly for Premier League coverage.
The union Bectu has criticized the incremental nature of the cuts, warning that declining staff morale and a thinning portfolio could threaten the overall quality of the BBC’s sports journalism.
