A tragic drowning incident during a team-building trip has led to serious legal consequences for the Ateneo de Manila University menβs basketball coaching staff.
On June 8, 2026, student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili lost their lives while participating in strenuous sea-based activities in Dipaculao, Aurora.
Authorities discovered that the athletes were subjected to hazardous weather and water conditions, raising significant concerns about safety protocols.
Following a thorough investigation by the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), officials have recommended filing hazing charges against 11 staff members, including former head coach Tab Baldwin.
In response to the tragedy, Tab Baldwin has resigned, and the UAAP has imposed a total ban on the involved staff.
Ateneo de Manila University is cooperating fully with the investigation and has observed a 40-day mourning period.
This incident has sparked a national conversation regarding the boundaries of team-building exercises and the duty of care that institutions owe to their student-athletes.
