AWS reports data loss in Middle East after drone strikes

In a significant incident highlighting the physical risks to digital infrastructure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) confirmed that some customer data hosted in the Middle East is permanently lost.
The damage stems from Iranian drone strikes that targeted AWS facilities in Bahrain and the UAE in March 2026.
While AWS employs advanced multi-zone redundancy, the scale of the physical destruction—caused by both the drone impacts and subsequent fire suppression efforts—surpassed the capacity of these safety systems.
In Bahrain, resources hosted exclusively in that region remain inaccessible, while one specific Availability Zone in the UAE suffered permanent data loss.
This event underscores a critical vulnerability: even advanced cloud systems can struggle when faced with large-scale physical warfare.
It serves as a stark reminder to organizations worldwide that while cloud providers offer high availability, geographic and geopolitical risks necessitate robust, off-site backup strategies to ensure true data sovereignty and business continuity.
