New Mental Health Support Center Opens in North Carolina
North Carolina is significantly transforming its approach to mental health care as of March 25, 2026.
A milestone in this shift is the opening of a new peer-run respite center in Cabarrus County, operated by the Promise Resource Network (PRN).
Funded by nearly $1 million from the NCDHHS, this facility offers a non-clinical, peaceful environment where individuals can regain balance with support from those with lived experience.
Beyond this single center, the state is addressing a critical behavioral health workforce shortage through programs like the Public Service Leadership Program and generous loan repayment incentives for rural professionals.
Furthermore, Governor Josh Stein’s administration is actively improving crisis response through Executive Order 33 and expanding Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) programs to favor treatment over incarceration.
With additional facilities like the Stephen M.
Morris Behavioral Health Center on the horizon, North Carolina is building a robust, peer-first infrastructure designed to provide compassionate and holistic support for all residents.
