Philadelphia mayor opens new drug recovery center
In January 2025, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker unveiled the Riverview Wellness Village, a landmark facility designed to support long-term addiction recovery.
Located on a 19-acre site in the Holmesburg area, this city-operated village serves individuals who have already completed inpatient treatment, providing a bridge to self-sufficiency.
Beyond offering stable housing for up to one year, the center provides essential services including healthcare, job counseling, and behavioral health support.
Mayor Parker intends for the facility to be a national model for addressing the opioid crisis and ending open-air drug markets.
While many officials praise the initiative as a crucial expansion of the city's safety net, some critics express concern regarding its proximity to the city jail complex, fearing it might stigmatize residents.
Nevertheless, the administration maintains that the site is an efficient use of public land, marking a bold, comprehensive approach to tackling addiction and promoting wellness in the community.
