African Union Celebrates World Water Day 2026
The African Union has officially designated 2026 as the Year of Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.
This initiative highlights water as a cornerstone for Africa's economic future, climate resilience, and public health.
Marking this commitment, the AU celebrated World Water Day on March 23, 2026, in Addis Ababa, adopting the theme 'Water and Gender' with the slogan 'Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.'
This event emphasized that water access is deeply tied to gender equality, given that women and girls frequently carry the burden of water collection.
However, the African Union is bridging policy and practice through the Africa Investment Programme, which currently supports a pipeline of projects worth US$32 billion.
By prioritizing inclusive, gender-responsive policies, the AU aims to transform water management from a high-level goal into tangible community-level improvements across the continent.
