Justin Trudeau Meets Nordic Leaders in Oslo for Summit

In June 2023, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau traveled to Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, to join the annual Nordic Prime Ministers' summit as a special guest.

While some observers mistakenly recall the meeting occurring in Oslo, Norway, the event served as a vital precursor to the NATO summit held in Lithuania.

Leaders from Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden gathered to discuss urgent matters, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and the integration of Sweden and Finland into the NATO alliance.

A primary focus of the talks was Arctic sovereignty, an area where Canada and Nordic nations share deep strategic interests.

Although Canada maintains significant diplomatic missions in Oslo to coordinate Arctic policy, the summit itself highlighted the unique role of Iceland as a collaborative bridge between North America and the Nordic region.
