UK Suspends Visas for Several Countries Amid Rising Asylum Claims
In March 2026, the UK government implemented a series of unprecedented visa restrictions, known as an emergency visa brake, to address rising asylum claims.
Starting March 26, 2026, the Home Office suspended student visas for nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, and Skilled Worker visas for Afghan nationals.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood stated these measures aim to restore border control while continuing to support genuine refugees.
Additionally, nationals of Nicaragua and St Lucia now require a standard visit visa instead of an Electronic Travel Authorisation.
While the government claims these actions are necessary to prevent system abuse, critics argue they damage the UK's global reputation and limit educational opportunities for vulnerable populations.
