Taiwan Increases Pediatric Fees to Address Doctor Shortage
Taiwan is currently grappling with a significant shortage of pediatricians, a crisis driven by low recruitment rates and systemic pressures.
With fewer medical students choosing to specialize in pediatrics due to demanding hours and lower relative salaries, many hospitals have struggled to maintain 24-hour emergency services.
To reverse this trend, the National Health Insurance Administration has launched a massive financial initiative.
Starting in 2026, the government will inject nearly NT$230 million into critical care services, including increased reimbursement for inpatient care and specialized bonuses for neonatal and psychiatric support.
This effort is part of a broader four-year, NT$13.5 billion "Children’s Health Care Improvement Program."
As Taiwan faces the irony of struggling to care for its youngest citizens amidst a rapidly aging population, these structural reforms aim to ensure that children receive the essential medical attention they need for their future well-being.
