World celebrates International Francophonie Day
Every year on March 20, the world comes together to celebrate International Francophonie Day.
This global event honors the French language and the vibrant cultures of more than 300 million speakers across five continents.
Far more than just a linguistic celebration, this day highlights a shared space of cooperation, democracy, and human rights.
The date commemorates the 1970 signing of the Niamey Convention, which laid the foundation for the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF).
Today, the OIF represents nearly 90 member states, reflecting a diverse community where roughly half of all speakers are under 30.
From Quebec to Africa, French remains a living, evolving language that bridges gaps in diplomacy and cultural exchange.
Throughout March, often called 'Francophonie Month,' people engage in concerts, film screenings, and literary readings to celebrate this unity.
