Guinea Dissolves Major Political Parties
In March 2026, the military-led government of Guinea took a decisive step to centralize authority by dissolving 40 political parties.
This decree, issued by the Ministry of Territorial Administration, targeted the country's three most influential opposition groups: the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea (UFDG), the Rally of the Guinean People (RPG), and the Union of Republican Forces (UFR).
This action follows the 2021 coup led by General Mamady Doumbouya, who has since tightened control over civil society.
Following a constitutional referendum that allowed junta leaders to seek the presidency, Doumbouya was declared the winner of the December 2025 election.
By effectively silencing the opposition, Guinea's leadership has sparked concerns about the country's democratic future and its alignment with other authoritarian regimes across the region.
