Canada announces federal funding to support Alberta businesses
In early 2026, the Canadian government, through Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan), announced significant funding to support Alberta's economic growth.
Minister Eleanor Olszewski emphasized that these investments help local businesses navigate global trade challenges while fostering innovation in high-tech sectors.
One key initiative is the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI).
In February, this program awarded $5.8 million to five projects in southern Alberta.
For instance, Mount Royal University received $1.5 million to create the Alberta Logistics Centre of Excellence.
Another major project is the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative (RAII).
In March 2026, the Medicine Hat firm 'Landing Zones Canada' received $1.16 million to develop AI-driven high-altitude drones.
By supporting logistics, food processing, and AI, the federal government aims to keep the Prairies competitive.
As this region generates roughly 25% of Canada’s GDP, these proactive measures ensure that Alberta remains resilient against global trade pressures and continues to lead in modern, technology-enabled industries.
